Making is Memory: A Special Limited Edition Satchel for A Woolen Affair
This is my take on a kanga, which is a kind of fabric sometimes worn by women in East Africa. Kangas have a border on all 4 sides, a central motif and usually, a proverb. They are sometimes made to honor a person or to commemorate an event so I thought the idea was perfect for this project.
I painted this design with watercolors, digitally printed it, then stitched up what I hope will be a special souvenir for you. The flower motif is a Bloodroot flower, which is indigenous to upstate NY and can be used to make red dye. Perfect for a fiber event happening in Kingston, NY. The flower falls onto a body of water and makes ripples reminding us that we affect everything we touch. We are connected. I’ve filled each flower petal with textures painted to look like woven patterns, another nod to this event that is a celebration of making with yarn and fiber.
This limited edition satchel is made of cotton canvas, is fully lined with my signature lining, has two pockets inside, a boxy bottom so it stands on its own, and it has a sturdy handle. Store your project securely with the drawstring closure. It’s a stunner and it’s perfect for carrying on its own or tucking into a bigger bag to take your project on the go.
The words “Making Is Memory” and the name of the event, A Woolen Affair, are printed directly into the fabric.
I put my heart into this one. That we affect everything we touch has always felt like the truth to me and being able to paint that idea and make it into this special keepsake fills me with immense gratitude to the source of my inspiration.
