The design was inspired by a trip to the Ufizi Gallery in Florence. While wandering that building and looking at the DaVinci’s and Botticelli’s I took out my camera and focused on the ornate picture frames. I would make my own gallery featuring Black women in silhouette rocking fabulous hairstyles and jewelry and place them inside of the gilded frames I saw at the Ufizi.
The scarves are 35x35 and feature a hand rolled hem, the high-end finish I’ve always wanted my scarves to have. They are digitally printed on both sides of the fabric so the print shows up vibrantly, no matter which side of the scarf is showing.
In rich, Jeweled Earth Red and mudcloth-esque motifs in the ground, Black women in silhouette hairstyles are surrounded by bright bursts of color and adorned with jewelry, some featuring Adinkra symbols for wisdom, abundance, and courage — my wish for my sisters across the diaspora.
