Sometimes the Design Chooses You

For months, I've been turning leftover fabric scraps from my project bags into Christmas ornaments. Piecing together African prints, playing with patterns, finding combinations that just worked.
I thought I was simply being resourceful.
Turns out, I was creating Dame Dame—an Adinkra symbol I'd never seen before.
I only discovered this while researching a completely different symbol. There it was: my exact ornament design, staring back at me from the screen. Dame Dame. A symbol of intelligence, craftiness, and strategy.
The symbol of making something clever from what you have.

I couldn't have designed a more perfect metaphor if I'd tried. These ornaments literally are Dame Dame—born from remnants, crafted with ingenuity, each one a small strategic victory over waste.
Watch the video below to see the ornament alongside the Dame Dame symbol. The resemblance is uncanny.
