Happy New Year! I Made You a Mixtape

Happy New Year, Y’all!

There’s a message for you in the music if you listen.

I’ve been making these little collages for myself that I call Notes to Self. This line from Count Me Out by Kendrick Lamar is the message I’m taking into 2026. I’m in control of my own destiny. The rest is noise.

My collection for 2026 is on the theme of Analog. Here’s a sneak peek at the first design to be released later this month — Mixtapes: The Remix

An earlier version of this design appeared in a collection I designed as a student at FIT in 2021 and later on a dress for Zuri in 2024. Maybe I have a future in trend forecasting, but “analog” is in the zeitgeist right now.

I took the things I loved about my original Mixtapes design and created a remix. As I worked on this remix I realized I was in a totally different headspace when I originally created this design. I made a playlist to reflect my current vibe and I’d like to share it with you. Links for Qobuz & Spotify are here, though I hope you’ll ditch Spotify.

This is the right time to release a full, updated Analog collection as we move into 2026. To me, the theme is about remembering a time before “going digital" felt like an assault. For example, a time before playlists were made by an algorithm. A playlist is another way to tell a story, isn’t it. So this is my playlist. My Music for the Revolution. What’s yours?

Everyone is welcome to do this, but one thing I would love to see especially from Black people across the diaspora, is for you to make your own playlist and share it. I’d love to see people talking to each other about the playlists on their socials across cultures. Divide and conquer has worked for far too long.

The unifying force is in the music.

This playlist reflects the point of view of one Black American woman from Queensbridge who grew up in the 1980s. It’s a snapshot of what the world feels like to me right now, what it has been, and what I hope it to be.

What are your songs saying? What is your message?
